Elephantine Island in Aswan

It is the largest island in Aswan . Since the Old Kingdom , the island has been considered a sacred place where god Khnum , who was the potter dedicated to the fabrication of the humans and their souls , lived .

The island was always being considered a strategic site for all the Pharaohs as it was controlling access to Egypt from the First Cataract . Around the island , we can find elephant-shaped granite rocks , which provided the island with its name . On many of these rocks , we can see Cartouches and inscriptions of Aswan governors , confirming the Egyptian authority over these domains .

The ancient name of the Island was Yabu , which means elephant in the Old Egyptian language .

The site is very beautiful with many small monuments like the Nilometer , The Ruins of the Temple of Khnom , and a small Museum .
